Moycullen Comhaltas

The Moycullen branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann was formed in 1997, led by Caomhán Ó Fatharta.
Today our branch has over 150 members. Our students take weekly classes on concertina, banjo, accordion, flute, fiddle, bodhrán and tin whistle. Ranganna ar fáil trí Gaeilge. The branch organises regular Oícheanta Cheoil, concerts, workshops and a yearly trip to Arann.
Our members have the option to enter the Galway Fleadh Cheoil Competitions and many have gone on to achieve success at the Connacht Fleadh and the All Ireland Fleadh. The branch also enters the U’15 and U’18 Grupaí Ceoil while our senior Céilí Band, Cogar, are regular participants at the All Ireland Fleadh.

Our Branch musicians are very much part of the local community, playing at the Senior Citizen’s Christmas party and also bring music, song and dance to the two local nursing homes. We encourage our members to attend workshops and courses which are organised nationally including Scoil Éigse and the Willy Clancy Summer School. We strive to keep our activities bilingual wherever practically possible as we believe that Irish is a crucial and enriching part of the national heritage.

Déanfaidh muid iarracht an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinnas chraobhi gcónaí. Bíonn ocáidí dá theangach again mar tuigeann muidan baint atá ag an gceol tradisiunta agus ár dteanga féin.

Oiche Cheoil are held in Árus Uilinn on at least five occasions during the winter, usually on Friday nights. They are an opportunity to play tunes our members have learned at the lessons. Players get great enjoyment from playing in a group session and they also have the opportunity to give a solo performance if they wish. And of course there's a Cupán Tae at the end of the night.
The branch has produced beginner and intermediate tune books to help build up a common repertoire of music. These tunes form the basic repertoire at the Oíche Cheoil.
Moycullen CCE Youth Banjo Group produced a CD in 2017. The aim of the album was to encapsulate the talent of the musician’s learning with the Moycullen branch of Comhaltas. The album was dedicated to the students themselves that worked hard on their tracks to get them studio ready.

Moycullen Comhaltas in association with NUI Galway, hosted the Galway Fleadh in 2015 and the Connacht Fleadh in 2017.
